Parasite Control for your Dog

There are many different parasites which can affect dogs, including internal parasites and external parasites.  Regular parasite control can help to protect your pet from these nasty little creatures. Your regular vet is the best person to give you advice on which parasites your pet needs to be protected against.  This will depend on factors such as on their age, lifestyle, other individual risk factors, time of year and where you live.  Here is an overview of a few of the more common parasites affecting dogs in Australia.

Disease from intestinal worms can also be easily be prevented in dogs. Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms can all cause disease in dogs. Some of these nasties are even zoonotic, which means they can lead to disease in humans too.

The predominant roundworm in dogs is Toxocara canis. The majority of puppies are infected while in the womb and are born with this infection.  From the time of birth, to the appearance of illness due to these worms is about 23 days. But puppies can also contract further infection through the milk of their mother when sucking, and from an infected environment, by accidentally ingesting roundworm eggs which have been shed in faeces of other infected animals. These are large worms, with adults up to 20cm long and very thick, so they can cause significant illness in pups. While they are developing to adults, they migrate through the body of the puppy on their way to their final home in the pup’s small intestine, including through the lungs, so puppies may develop a cough and respiratory problems with roundworm infection. Other signs include diarrhoea, a dull and scruffy coat and a pot-bellied appearance.  In rare cases, the worms can completely obstruct the gut, which can be fatal. Older dogs tend to develop immunity to these parasites so signs of disease are less common, but pregnant and lactating females can develop an active infection and shed the parasites in milk and faeces, which can infect pups.

Roundworm eggs in the environment can also pose a problem for people – they can be zoonotic and cause disease in humans who accidentally ingest them. A roundworm in a human trying to migrate as it would in a puppy gets very lost and can end up in almost any organ.  The most well known disease in humans is called “ocular larva migrans”, with the worms travelling to the eye, but “visceral larva migrans” is another term, to indicate the worms travelling to any organ.

To protect both our dogs and our human families, it is important to worm pups and adult dogs regularly. Puppy worming should start at 2 weeks of age and continue through the life of the dog.  The frequency depends on the age of the dog, its lifestyle and the product used. Worm control can be in the form of top-spot treatments, tablets, chews, liquids, and pastes. There are many combination treatments which mix intestinal worm control with heartworm control and even sometimes flea and/or tick control.  Speak to your pet’s health care experts to determine which is best for your dog.

Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala) are not too dissimilar to roundworms in dogs.  They both live in the small intestine as adults and migrate through the body of a pup, and can be contracted through accidental ingestion of eggs from the faeces of an infected dog or from the milk of their mother. However, pups cannot contract these parasites in the womb, but can be infected by a parasite directly chomping through their skin – these worms have teeth!  They are much smaller than roundworms (only a couple of centimetres long), so respiratory disease is less common. When they bite their way in, they can end up in the footpads of dogs, causing intense itching. But unlike roundworms, hookworms suck blood, so along with diarrhoea, affected animals can become anaemic due to the blood loss – this can be fatal.

This is also a potential zoonosis. If a hookworm accidentally tries to bite into the skin of a human instead of a dog, it may cause a disease known as “cutaneous larva migrans”. As in dogs, it is very itchy in people, and red tracts under the skin can be seen where the parasite is trying to migrate.

Worming recommendations for hookworms are the same as for roundworms, with the same products being effective in both types of worms.

Whipworms are another intestinal parasite of dogs, but these tend to be less of a concern than the other two types of parasites we have learned about because they don’t affect young puppies, cannot be acquired from the mother and they are not zoonotic, so not a concern for people.  Whipworms live in the large intestine. Infection is acquired via accidental ingestion of the parasites from the environment. Their eggs have very thick shells and can survive out there for up to 5 years! Whipworm infection is often asymptomatic, or causes relatively mild clinical signs; however, a severe case can lead to chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight loss, dehydration, anaemia and just not ‘thriving’.  These parasites don’t suck blood, but do poke their heads into the lining of the intestine and leave a small hole there, which can bleed and cause the blood loss.

It is not usually necessary to start to treat pups for these worms until they are 10-12 weeks of age, but as most worming treatments are combination treatments which will also cover roundworms and hookworms, it is often commenced earlier than this.

Tapeworms are quite different parasites from the three we have just talked about.  They also live in the intestine (usually small) of dogs, but must also spend a portion of their life inside another animal in order to survive to adulthood. There are two main tapeworms which affect dogs: the flea tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum and the hydatid tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus.

The flea tapeworm is contracted by a dog when it swallows an infected flea.  This tapeworm does not cause too many problems in a dog other than occasionally some mild diarrhoea, and, when the dog passes tapeworm segments in the faeces, some itching around the anus. Regular flea treatment is important to reduce the chances of the dog catching this parasite, and medications are available to treat infected dogs too. These are often part of the combination treatments which cover other intestinal parasites.

The hydatid tapeworm is a little more complex.  It is contracted by a dog when it ingests the raw organ meat of infected sheep, cattle, kangaroos or occasionally pigs.  As with flea tapeworm, this does not cause too many problems in an infected dog.  Some mild diarrhoea is possible, but little else is usually seen. However, when the dog passes tapeworm segments in its faeces, these can be infectious to humans.  If a human contracts this disease, it can cause a large cyst in an organ, often the lungs or liver.  This cyst can be up to 50cm in diameter and filled with fluid.  It will require careful surgical removal.  So the main reason we treat our dogs for this parasite is in fact to protect our own health. Look for products which contain the ingredient ‘praziquantel’ to ensure that the dog is being effectively treated for this parasite. To prevent any shedding of tapeworm segments in faeces, monthly treatment may be administered. Not feeding raw untreated offal to dogs is also recommended – feed gently steamed Tucker Time instead!

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is spread by mosquitos. If an infected mosquito bites a dog and injects infectious larvae, these larvae will travel around in the dog’s blood for about six months, before reaching its heart and lungs and settling in here. During the first few months after infection, when the larvae are tiny and travelling around in the bloodstream, they don’t cause any significant damage to the dog and no clinical signs of infection are apparent.  During this time, several medications are effective in killing the immature worms before they cause heartworm disease. This includes monthly top-spots, tablets, or chews and an annual heartworm disease preventative injection.

But once the worms reach the heart (more accurately the pulmonary arteries carrying blood from the heart to the lungs, and sometimes into right ventricle) and grow and mature into adults, the trouble starts. They can grow to around 30cm long, and resemble cooked spaghetti. They can occlude blood vessels and interfere with blood flow and small chunks of them can break off and be carried through the blood vessels and cause an “embolism” which can block off an entire vessel and prevent it supplying blood to an organ.  Signs that a dog has this disease include a soft cough and reduced exercise tolerance – these are signs of congestive heart failure. This can be progressive and sometimes fatal. Dogs with suspected heartworm disease should be presented to the vet, who can run a simple test to confirm the diagnosis. There is a treatment available, but it takes quite some time to carry out and is a high risk procedure, which could be fatal at any stage. Medication is injected to kill the adult worms, but it does not do so immediately due to the risk of completely blocking the pulmonary artery or another vessel if all worms suddenly died and were dislodged. During the time the worms are dying, the dog must be completely restricted from any form of exercise, to prevent dislodgement and to give the dog’s immune system time to break them down slowly and remove them.  Prevention of heartworm disease is much better than cure!

imageTicks are another potentially dangerous parasite that are present in some areas. Paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) are one species of tick that are endemic in many areas of Australia at certain times of the year and can cause very serious disease, including paralysis and in many cases, death. The tick season is generally from spring trough to late autumn. The natural hosts for Paralysis ticks are native wildlife in the bush, but they can – and do – attach to passing dogs and start to feed on their blood. They can attach anywhere on the dog, but are more commonly on the front half, such as lips, chin, around the eyes, in or around the ears, the back of the head, neck or front legs. Less commonly, they are found around the anus or between the toes. Generally, dogs will only have one to three Paralysis ticks on them, so the blood loss is not severe.  However, these ticks inject a neurotoxin as they feed. This causes progressive paralysis of the muscles throughout the body over the next 24-48 hours, and can be fatal. Early in the disease, a change in the dog’s bark is noticeable, with weakness in the back legs, a loss of appetite and vomiting. The weakness progresses in severity and moves forward to include the forelimbs, the vomiting becomes more severe, and is accompanied by excessive salivation. Dogs start to pant, which progresses to severe respiratory difficultly. As disease progresses further, they lose the ability to swallow, then to breathe. They fall into a coma, then die.

A dog should be immediately presented to the vet for treatment if tick paralysis is suspected. This is an emergency situation and every second counts for your pet. The tick should be removed and treatment instituted; the earlier this happens, the better the dog’s chance of survival.

The Brown Dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is much less dangerous, but is still to be avoided, as these ticks tend to travel in packs and when enough of them attach and suck blood from dogs, it can cause anaemia in pups, small or debilitated adult dogs.  These ticks can live in and around kennels rather than out in the bush, so dogs don’t have to have travelled anywhere to be affected with these ticks.

Ticks can be killed before they cause a problem with a variety of products including top-spots, sprays, tablets, chews, and collars. Remember even if a tick treatment product is used, it is important to check the entire body of the dog for ticks daily in tick areas.

A few fleas (Ctenocephalides felis and C. canis) can quickly lead to an infestation and quickly become a problem for our pets. Fleas are external parasites which feed on the blood of pets – both cats and dogs. The adults live on the skin of pets and they are prolific breeders, producing hundreds of eggs every day. Eggs and the other juvenile stages of fleas don’t live on the pet. They live in the pet’s environment and can survive for many months and be very hard to eradicate from there. They provide a constant source of new fleas to infect pets. As discussed earlier in this article, fleas can be a source of the flea tapeworm for dogs, but the major health problem they cause is skin irritation and itching. Some dogs are more sensitive to fleas than others, many even suffer from Flea Allergy Dermatitis, with severe skin disease from only a very few fleas.

There are many flea treatment options available today including top-spots, sprays, tablets, shampoos, powders, chews, tablets and collars. There are products to kill the adults, other products to kill the juveniles in the environment and some which do both. Flea treatments may be combined with other parasite treatments too, such as tick treatment products.  For animals which don’t enjoy the monthly medications, Tucker Time cut into small cubes can be a good way to hide tablets, or as a reward for accepting the medication like a good dog!

There is a lot to consider with respect to parasites, and many combination treatments are available to cover multiple parasites so it is best to speak to your pet’s health care expert for specific advice for your dog, based on your local area and individual risk factors.
